I think that they should stay in chronological order (as published). If you read "The Lion With and the Wardrobe" first it's such a splendid introduction to Jack's writing style which can be applied to his later writings. I rather like finding out what happened in the very beginning in the middle of the series. It's not so abrupt to read any of the Narnia books out of order b/c they all have their own wonderful plots.
I can understand both sides of the issue. on the one hand, the chronological order makes it easier to understand and follow, especially for a child. one the other hand i like the idea of starting with LWW, as you said, it is a good intro to Lewis. plus it (as the article said) gives the series a more fairy-tale feel from the get go; it's a more interesting a subtle way of meeting Aslan and the whole of Naria, meeting it the way the Pevensie kids do rather than at it's creation.
but i also agree that no matter what order you read them in, they are pretty well self-contained.
Do you like that little picture of that ADORABLE girl w/that huge cello? She reminds me of the girl who played in the 90's version of "The Secret Garden."
